Forced Migration Online has launched a series of podcasts recorded at the bi-annual conference of the International Association for the Study of Forced Migration (IASFM), held in Cairo between January 6th and 10th 2008. A large proportion of those attending and giving presentations were researchers and practitioners from the global South. The FMO team made audio recordings of the conference’s plenary sessions and these will be launched gradually over the coming weeks.

  • Plenary 1:  Emerging patterns of irregularity and their effects among migrants and refugees in the Middle East

  • Plenary 2: The situation of refugees in the Middle East

  • Plenary 3: Regions at the Crossroads: Transregional Forced Migration

  • Plenary 4: The Voices of the Displaced in Forced Migration Research

IASFM Conferences Background

The major means by which IASFM seeks to advance its goals is through biennial international conferences. These conferences have been held under IASFM auspices since 1996. IASFM conferences provide an interdisciplinary forum for intellectual exchange and communication between academics, researchers, practitioners and policy-makers. The outcome of discussion is disseminated through a rapporteur's summary report of each meeting. These reports are submitted to the Journal of Refugee Studies and Forced Migration Review.

IASFM conferences are built on four earlier meetings of IASFM's predecessor body: The International Research and Advisory Panel (IRAP). Those four meetings were organized by the Refugee Studies Programme at the University of Oxford. The fifth IRAP was effectively the first IASFM conference - but the association chose to keep the numbering reflecting its IRAP past. This 5TH CONFERENCE was held from 9-12 April 1996 at the Centre for Refugee Studies, Moi University, Eldoret, Kenya.

  • The 6TH CONFERENCE was held from 13-16 December 1998 in Jerusalem. The local host on that occasion was the Gaza Community Mental Health Programme.

  • The 7TH CONFERENCE was held in Johannesburg, South Africa in January 9-12, 2001, hosted by the University of Witwatersrand.

  • The 8TH CONFERENCE was held in Chiang Mai, Thailand, on January 5-9, 2003, hosted by the Asian Research Centre for Migration of the Chulalongkorn University.

  • The 9TH CONFERENCE was held in Sao Paulo, Brazil on January 9-13, 2005, hosted by the Pontifical Catholic University of Sao Paulo and the Latin American Parliament.

  • The 10TH CONFERENCE was held in Toronto, Canada on June 18-22, 2006, hosted by the Centre for Refugee Studies, York University

  • The 11th CONFERENCE was held in Cairo, Egypt on January 6-10, 2008, hosted ny the Forced Migration and Refugee Studies Program of the American University in Cairo
